Levada-walking in Madeira,
June 2016
Writing-wise, I am currently doing more research in preparation for another regency romance.
![]() Levada-walking in Madeira, June 2016 In my historical romance ROSE GLACE, set in the ice cream industry in late Victorian England, the hero discovers Rose stowed away on his ship and deposits her with friends on Madeira while he sails on to South Africa. The friends live in a house on a levada high above the port at Funchal. It was a delight to visit this beautiful island again, after a number of years, and clock up 90 miles of levada walking in a two week stay. These days most of the exposed paths are protected with fences, but some were not and it was quite nerve-racking on one stretch to step along a 30cm wide path with a sheer drop of 30m to one side.
